Shell is building a plant at its Pernis Energy and Chemical Park near Rotterdam in the Netherlands to process raw materials such as vegetable oils, animal fats and waste oils into renewable diesel for use in vehicles and sustainable fuel for use in aircraft. The process is known as HEFA (hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids). Covering an area equivalent to 28 soccer pitches, the biofuel plant in Rotterdam will be the largest in Europe and will produce up to 820.000 tons of biofuel per year.
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is an alternative fuel to fossil kerosene that can help to significantly reduce emissions from air traffic. It is a key driver in achieving the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) goal of making international aviation carbon-free by 2050.
WWV sees itself as a partner to the circular economy and was already involved in the project during the planning phase. We are supporting the entire project as a permanent partner for piping construction and equipment installation. The aim is also to make plant construction itself more sustainable, for example by introducing electric vehicles, minimizing transport, repairing instead of disposing of the equipment.
